An afternoon of intergenerational storytelling, passion-and-expertise sharing, and show ‘n’ tell ‘n’ demonstrate ‘n’ perform, particularly highlighting the excitement and contributions of Chicagoland elders. It goes until we have no more occult lore, presentations, and science left to explore for the day — with breaks in between for people to chat and introduce themselves, etc. — or we run out of time with the Comfort Station folks. Whatever comes first.

We intend afterwards to relocate locally to one or more BYOB establishments and keep up the conversations there, for dinner and drinks.

We’ll have a short spiel about Analytics Lounge to start off, and then we’ll cede the floor to whoever wants to present! There’ll be a pull down screen that should allow us to project PowerPoints and other AV media as necessary!

We’ll pull names from a hat (at least figuratively speaking) and if, miraculously, we run out of time, there will certainly be opportunities to continue this as an ongoing event series and share your story, your research, your perspective publicly in the future.

Science Caltrops: They may not literally prick and stick into the soles of your feet, but we intend for the experience to be unforgettable and life-affirming nevertheless!

In an epoch of United States history in which the encroaching austerity and isolation program of the academy — i.e. the typical R1 research university and its ilk — and the drudgery of “industry” is — as much as it ever has —

Siloing scientific and technical personnel and entire cultures of thought from one another and from local engagement;

Promoting an atmosphere that values “appearances” only and a limited, myopic self-preservation above truly new under the sun innovation and human quality of life;

Preparing its “trainees” only for the abattoir rather than self-employment and creating jobs and opportunities for others;

Using its money-as-speech to influence policy in damaging and stultifying ways for generations to come;

And insulating its only “success stories” — the managerial caste — from the “insidious” involvement of the hoi polloi and from experiencing even a shred of responsibility for public betterment,

This is our attempt to “cut through the mental grease and grime” (Devo’s words) and cultivate a community grounded in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics, in solidarity, collaboratively, with you here.

We will not be able to do it without you. Seriously. We are dead serious.

“It’s time to seek out new traditions
We know where the old ones took us
And now we are all here together” (Devo)
