Baby Blue is pleased to announce the inaugural show of its new location, Yve’s Concave Mirror, a solo exhibition of paintings and ceramics by Minami Kobayashi.
Glowing screens illuminate private places. Interiors that hold quiet moments and intimate relationships. Minami Kobayashi captures these with translucent mark making that suggests figures, space, narrative. Her rapid brushstrokes create an uncertainty with a shifting sense of depth and transient movement. In the apathy that occurs after climax, female figures often dominate the canvas in a marked reversal of latent modernist language.
The included series of ceramics situate the viewer in a quiet and charming exhibition space. Their simplicity belies an attention to form that rhymes in her painting. Quoting from recent blockbusters, medieval tapestries, and memory with equal depth of feeling, they entertain the possibility that form might transcend aesthetics.
Minami Kobayashi [b.1989] is an artist from Nagoya, Japan currently living and working in Chicago, USA.
