HUMBOLDT PARK: Jens Jensen’s “Living Laboratory”

As one of the anchor sites selected for the Chicago Architecture Biennial, The National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture celebrates the Humboldt Park Stables which serves as home to the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture. Inspired by the theme “Make New History,” we created an exhibit highlighting the history of the stables building, Humboldt Park, and the vibrant community that surrounds the park. The exhibition highlights the life and work of Jens Jensen. A Danish immigrant who lived nearby, Jensen served as Superintendent of Humboldt Park in 1895, and he worked out of an office in the stables building. After exploring new ideas and creating innovative designs in Humboldt Park, Jensen went on to become “Dean of American landscape architecture.” Over the years, many immigrant groups and ethnic communities contributed to the development of the Humboldt Park community. The exhibit examines the community’s fascinating transitions, including the transformation of the stables into the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture in 2014.
