————————–

Are You a Lover? is an ongoing project about living within a love ethic in the US.

The definition of love – via bell hooks via M. Scott Peck – is the combination of caring, commitment, respect, trust, responsibility, and knowledge. At present, this project asserts that Americans view love with suspicion, cynicism, and derision. Loving must be nurtured throughout a person’s life. However, radical and historical American individualism denies this possibility.

Loving and sincerity are mocked as weaknesses. Radical individualism denies our intrinsic need to be among others. Over time, people learn to embrace and preach isolationism. In recent political events, the idea of “the triumphant man, overcoming all odds” resurged. Many people rejected their neighbors, communities, and civic responsibilities. Many people can’t, or won’t, love. Asking “are you a lover?” is a necessity in modern times.
