In artist Vincent Tiley’s 2016 video “Material Eyes,” the artist’s mother operates a Da Vinci surgical robot to explore and manipulate his face. Seeing becomes an invasive physical action as the eye of the camera is given mechanical hands that prod and poke the artist like a specimen. Pathos is registered by the machine through the delicate gestures of the artist’s mother. (screens continuously on a loop)
