Apr 20th 2017

Join us for April’s Black Scholars Salon, a collaboration between Rebuild Foundation, Arts + Public Life and the Center for the Study of Race, Politics and Culture featuring Thelma Golden in conversation with Theaster Gates. Thelma and Theaster will discuss Golden’s experiences growing a Black museum, and the role and challenge of institutionality in black cultural spaces.

Thelma Golden is director and chief curator of the Studio Museum in Harlem. From 2000 to 2005, she was the museum’s deputy director for exhibitions and programs. Golden previously spent a decade at the Whitney Museum of American Art. She began her career at the Studio Museum in 1987. In 2010, President Obama appointed her to the Committee for the Preservation of the White House, and in 2015, she joined the Barack Obama Foundation’s board of directors. Golden serves as 2015–2016 chair of New York City’s Cultural Institutions Group, where she is Manhattan vice chair, and on the Cultural Affairs Advisory Commission, appointed by Mayor de Blasio.
