This tour focuses on radical changes in the representation of animals and plants in contemporary art. The headline ‘Animals have taken over art, and art wonders why’ raised eyebrows when it appeared on the New York Times in 2000. Painted, sculpted, photographed, taxidermied, and in formaldehyde, animals, and even plants have emerged from the backgrounds of artistic representations demanding our attention—but why? More and more artists have become concerned with global warming, environmental degradation, and other manifestations of the problematic relationship with nature that have characterized the last two hundred years.
