The Space Between

@ Uptown Arts Center

941 W Lawrence Ave, Chicago, Illinois 60640

Opening Friday, June 17th, at 6PM

On view through Sunday, July 17th

In August of 2014, four women artists (Leah Mayers, Claire Rabkin, Jamie Thome, Cynthia Weiss,) now known as the Egrets Collective, embarked on a textual collaborative inspirational project. Each evening, one would text the other three a word, which would be used the next day to make something; after each artist finished their piece, they would text a picture of it (with the day’s word) to one another.

Both an exercise in embracing as well as one in letting go, the daily assignment process project provides immense inspiration and is an incredibly joyful experience, every day. Each artist takes different approaches to each word, and to the process itself, and it is terrible fun.

The Egrets have repeated this process several times over the past year and a half, most recently in January 2016, where all of the words for the month were inspired by a late December visit to the Uptown Arts Center; each word used in this latest incarnation was inspired by the space itself, and these site specific installations are the result.

This exhibition will be complemented with a series of events, workshops, and other happenings.
