Wasteland: Drawings by Hollis Hammonds

@ Gallery 2506

2506 N California Avenue Chicago, IL 60618

Opening Friday, April 15th, from 6PM - 9PM

On view through Friday, May 20th

“Drawing and storytelling have always been essential elements in my creative work. For me, drawing is the most intimate, honest, and visceral form of art making. Interested in the hand of the artist, the imperfection found in underdrawings and the hand-made, my work is often focused on drawing as medium, process, and subject matter. Through drawing, I document people/places/events, weaving together both personal and universal narratives”, said Hammonds.

After her childhood home burned down, she became obsessed with piles of rubble and the drawings of Wasteland are evidence of personal memories or broader acts of destruction. Hammond has shown throughout the United States and is currently Chair of the Department of Visual Studies at St. Edward’s University in Austin, TX. Wasteland will be her first exhibit in Chicago.

The opening reception will take place at Gallery 2506 from 6-9 pm and will run through May 20, 2016.
