Feb 19th 2016

Presenters Caroline Grey and Sharon Bautista will introduce the concept of Wunderkammer, or a cabinet of curiosities. These cabinets, or, in some cases, whole rooms popular in the 17th century, were displays of natural and made objects collected by experts and amateurs alike. These collections, long-gone, survive only in inventories, prints, and paintings:

“a drawing in chalk of the great fair of Almachata in Arabia, which is held at night to avoid the great heat of the sun…a dream image showing a prairie or sea meadow at the bottom of the Mediterranean, off the coast of Provence” (from Sir Thomas Browne’s Bibliotheca Abscondita)

Using the Stony Island collections as a starting point, Sharon and Caroline will discuss the history, assemblage, and definition of wonder.

Tall cake reception to follow. RSVP here: https://wunderkammer.typeform.com/to/Dbz9PC
