Winter is the cold of December, but what is “Formal”? Is “Formal” a dance (should we be dancing…)? A posture? A handshake in place of a wave, a “Dear,” in place of a “Hey!”? Is “Formal” cursive, or does it stand straight? Does it leave saying “it’s been real” or does it bow?
Winter Formal is an exhibition of works that lean against and stand alone; that sense you and project. It is both a question and a declaration. Treating “Formal” as a stand in for the present: the here right now, Winter Formal is a proposition that the physical is formal enough. What more is required of a date than to stand and not fall? Whether front and center or pinned to the wall wanting to observe instead of dance, the works exist, inviting you to come and sway along with them.
