Elastic Arts is pleased to announce Victoria Martinez as its artist in residence for the summer of 2015. Between June and August, Martinez will carry out her Eleven Eleven project, which is comprised of an evolving installation at Elastic, an exhibition at Comfort Station in July, and a series of site-specific public sculptures created in collaboration with teens from the Logan Square Neighborhood Association.
Martinez’s work is characterized by amalgamations of vivid colors and patterns. Her source material ranges from salvaged textiles to bargain piñata materials, which in turn serve as fodder for her various molecular arrangements. Recalling Daniel Buren’s early public works, Martinez often inserts these assemblages into public spaces in her Pilsen neighborhood as a way of dialoguing with abandon spaces and the shifiting social patterns that they suggest. It is in this sense that her visual practice is directly linked to her pedagogical background, where her teaching becomes a way of extending this dialogue around place and memory.
Victoria Martinez is an interdisciplinary artist who received her BFA in Fine Art Studio from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2010. She works in soft sculpture, installation collage, exploring chance, intuition and the ephemeral. Her work has been showcased at the Center for Hindsight at Duke University, Southside Hub of Production, Maryland Institute College of Art, Minnesota Center for Book Arts and the University of Minnesota. Martinez is also dedicated to the advancement of art education and has recently led projects at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago Children’s Museum, Urban Gateways, and the Museum of Contemporary Art.
