Kelly K. Jones’ (MFA 2012) photographs of the North Lawndale neighborhood where she was born and raised aim to challenge our expectations and stereotypes. As both an insider and outsider, the artist explores her personal and complex relationship to place and identity as a white woman growing up and living in an African-American community. Portraits staged in nature and interior studies offer up figures in which history and intimacy collide. Navigating between the record and the metaphor, Jones’ images of her personal landscape consider issues of culture, race, belonging, and self-image.
