This is Still Life presents a group of contemporary artists who have begun to develop (and continue to develop) personal philosophies that they express through the art of still life. This survey also presents work by artists who typically find their subject matter in the animate, who on occasion use still life not only as a means of study, but as a romantic exploration of form and process.

The still life presents an honest and complex vision of reality, at times altered by the addition of personal and secret sets of symbols. Somewhat ordinary objects isolated from their usual settings acquire a different worth and beg more attention, and the unfamiliar or strange begs more attention still. This extraction evokes a storied past that is exuberant, wistful, frightening and intense, all in the same breath. It is for this reason that still life art is owed a more sincere inspection. It is a realm that demands a deep understanding and appreciation for precedent and possibility; and the reward for such a focused gaze is a painting, a sculpture, a photograph, that registers the most durable aspects of image and substance.

The artists featured in this survey expound the genre by presenting the essence of the objects in certain, personal terms. They distill emotion and history from the inert with a poetic precision, and transfigure still life fiercely by epitomizing engagement with their subject and medium.

Work by Wilford Barrington(Toronto), Amir H. Fallah (Los Angeles), Ian Hawk (Portland), Bruce Ingram(London), Sandy Kim (NYC), Jason Lazarus (Chicago), Maximilian Schubert (NYC), Dylan Walker (Portland) and Harley Young (Chicago). Curated by Ghazal Hashemi.
